CBJ is considering closing aquatic programs.
Juneau Pools (both locations) may be closed by the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly. Closing Juneau Pools is a threat to continuation of the Aukeman Triathlon, parks and rec kids triathlon camp, Dimond Dash Relay Triathlon, and active lifestyles in Juneau. Now is time for comment and action. The CBJ FY27 Budget process is underway and should be closed by mid June.
“Keeping Juneau Pools Keeps the Aukeman.”
Keeping Juneau Pools keeps the Aukeman Triathlon. We have seen three consecutive years of growth – in participants, volunteers, and partnerships. This growth bucks national trends and has enabled us to offer a professional and safe triathlon in Juneau. Our growth has seen more visitors to Juneau and allowed us to hire local vendors for event services. Please keep triathlon in Juneau.
Currently, our organization partners with the Juneau Pools in three key ways:
- Aukeman provides volunteer staff to Juneau Pools to run the kids triathlon camp in April and May.
- Aukeman provides supplies and expertise to run the Dimond Dash Relay Triathlon in May.
- Juneau Pools is the Aukeman’s source of trained lifeguards, which we must have to run our event.
Informally, the Juneau Pools serve as a cornerstone of the triathlon community in Juneau:
- Aukeman athletes train year-round in the Juneau Pools.
- Athletes use the Juneau Pools as meeting locations for group activities.
- Aukeman participant growth has primarily been from new-to-the-sport athletes, with younger athletes being a key factor. These youth are largely from the high school swim team and Glacier Swim Club, both of which would cease to exist with both pools closing.
